How to watch IPTV on iPhone and iPad with an M3U playlist or Xtream login
If your IPTV provider gave you an M3U link or an Xtream Codes login, you can watch it in Onyx IPTV in about two minutes. This guide covers both, plus the EPG and the problems people run into most.
Onyx IPTV is a player only. It does not provide, host or sell channels, movies or series. You need a subscription from an IPTV provider and are responsible for the rights to the content you play.
What you need
- An iPhone or iPad with iOS 18 or later, or an Apple TV (the tvOS app is on the same App Store listing).
- Onyx IPTV from the App Store (free).
- From your provider, one of: an M3U / M3U8 playlist URL, or an Xtream Codes login (server URL, username, password), or a get.php / player_api link that contains those.
Set up an M3U playlist
Open Settings → Connections → Add Provider
Choose M3U. Give the connection a name so you can tell providers apart later.
Paste the playlist URL
Paste the full link, including any ?username=…&password=… part. Do not add spaces before or after it.
Add an EPG source (optional)
If your provider offers an XMLTV or EPG URL, paste it into the EPG field. Onyx then shows the running programme, progress bars and the guide grid.
Save and load
Onyx downloads the playlist, sorts channels into groups and separates live TV from movies and series automatically.
Set up an Xtream Codes login
Open Settings → Connections → Add Provider
Choose Xtream.
Paste the link or type the details
Paste the get.php or player_api link your provider sent and Onyx fills in server, username and password. Or enter the three values by hand. The server URL usually looks like http://host:port.
Check the status card
After signing in the connection card shows the account expiry date, the number of simultaneous streams your plan allows and how many channels support catch-up.
Guide and catch-up load automatically
Xtream accounts deliver the EPG with the login. Channels with an archive show a replay option, and the “Missed something?” shelf collects finished programmes.
Using the app
- Live TV: the list shows the running programme, a progress bar and time left per channel. Tap the star to favourite. Filter by group or category.
- Guide: a full EPG grid with a now-line. Search the whole guide by title and set a reminder for an upcoming programme.
- Library: movies and series with posters, plot, cast and trailers. Continue Watching resumes where you stopped.
- Search: one search across channels, movies and series.
- Quality grouping (Pro): SD, HD, FHD and 4K variants of the same channel collapse into one row.
Troubleshooting
“Could not sign in” or an empty channel list
Check for extra spaces in the server URL, username or password. Make sure the account has not expired (the status card shows the date). Some providers block VPN connections.
A stream does not start or stops after a few seconds
First confirm the same stream works in the player your provider recommends. If it does, your plan may have hit its simultaneous-stream limit. Onyx warns you before playback when all slots are in use.
Video plays but there is no sound, or the file is MKV or AVI
Onyx uses the native iOS player first and automatically falls back to its VLC engine for containers and codecs iOS cannot decode. If a stream still fails, try Settings → Playback and change the preferred engine.
The guide is empty
M3U playlists need a separate EPG (XMLTV) URL from your provider. Xtream accounts load it automatically; use Settings → Refresh Content if it is stale.
Nothing helps
Write to onyx.iptv.support@gmail.com. Do not include your provider password in the mail.
